Google opens smart home access to AI agents like Claude
Google has launched a new interface called Home MCP that lets outside AI programs such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Google Antigravity connect to devices in the Google Home ecosystem.
This affects people who use smart devices like Google Nest cameras, thermostats, or connected light bulbs and pay for the Premium Advanced subscription at $20 a month. Access starts in the US only and will expand over the coming weeks.
According to Google, these AI agents can control devices, summarize camera footage, analyze usage history, and build custom dashboards using natural language. Setup requires creating a Google Cloud project and linking it to the chosen agent.
Google says it has built in safety limits, such as preventing agents from unlocking doors. Taylor Lehman from Google Home & Nest noted that, depending on the agent used, the connection could still lead to unexpected behavior.
Engadget reports that the underlying MCP standard has been criticized by security experts for weaknesses like inconsistent authentication requirements, which have already contributed to data breaches in other applications.
It remains unclear whether and when the feature will reach cheaper subscription tiers or other countries, and exactly how Google's safety protections work in practice.
WHY IT MATTERS
Letting AI agents analyze and control home cameras, locks, and appliances goes far beyond older voice assistants and opens new ways for misuse or malfunction.
WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW
- Review every permission carefully Before connecting any AI agent, check exactly which devices and data it can access. Only allow what you truly need and decline anything extra.
- Only upgrade if you really need it This feature requires a paid premium subscription. Think about whether you actually want this extra access to your home before signing up.
- Watch for unusual device behavior After setup, keep an eye on whether lights, cameras, or other devices act unexpectedly. Report anything strange to support right away.
- Stay updated on security issues Follow news about security flaws in AI connection tools like MCP. Install any available updates quickly to close known weaknesses.
